Livonia - On July 10, 1971 at 2 p.m., Miss Donna Abbey became the bride of James William VanDerMeid at the Livonia Methodist Church. The Rev. Walter Barger, a former pastor of the Livonia Church, officiated.

Miss Abbey is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald F. Abbey of Livonia and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William VanDerMeid also of Livonia.

The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a gown of white embroidered batiste with a floor-length illusion veil embroidered to match her dress. She carried a bouquet of long-stem white roses and carnations.

Miss Linda Melching was her maid of honor and wore a light apricot gown trimmed with ivory lace and carried a basket of blue and white daisies.

The bridesmaids, dressed like the maid of honor, were Miss Linda VanDerMeid, sister of the bridegroom, and Mrs. Patrick McHale of Rochester.

Miss Wendy Briggs of Hemlock was the flower girl and Jeff Drain of Geneseo, the ring-bearer.

Mr. VanDerMeid chose for his best man, Timothy Minnehan of Livonia. The ushers were Peter Parker of Livonia and Patrick McHale of Rochester.

The bride’s mother wore a mint green ensemble and the mother of the groom chose a powder blue ensemble.

A reception for the wedding party and guests was held at the American Legion Home in Honeoye Falls immediately following the ceremony.

The bride is a graduate of Livonia Central School and attended Monroe Community College and is employed at Eastman Kodak. Mr. VanDerMeid is also a graduate of Livonia Central School and from the State University Agricultural and Technical College at Alfred in 1970. He has just finished four and one-half month basic training at Fort Knox, KY.

Wayland — Livonia — James W. VanDerMeid, 73 years of age, passed away at Rochester General Hospital Tuesday July 18, 2023.

Jim was born December 28, 1949 in Rochester the son of William and Shirley (Drain) VanDerMeid. He grew up in Livonia and was a Livonia resident until the late 1990’s. On June 3, 2000 Jim and Shirley Ellis were married and have celebrated over 23 years together.

Jim’s entrepreneurial career spanned a few different areas. He enjoyed success early on in the family dairy equipment business at VanDerMeid Dairy Equipment in Livonia, building homes for several years, partners in the Car Corral used car business, owner of Wayland Family Auto Center and finally retiring as a distributor / franchise owner for Mac Tools. Jim also served in United States National Guard. His hobbies included part of his career work, building and remodeling houses and fixing cars. Wintering in Myrtle Beach was a lifelong dream he and Shirley accomplished; his garage was his man cave!; and his favorites were Diet Pepsi and chocolate chip cookies.

Jim was pre-deceased by his parents, William and Shirley VanDerMeid; and his father in law, Donald Ellis. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Shirley VanDerMeid of Wayland; his son Michael (Kristine) VanDerMeid of Livonia; his daughter Nicole VanDerMeid of Pittsford; his grandchildren, Samantha Morris and Mikayla VanDerMeid; his sister, Lynda Robinson of Lyons; his mother in law, Lucille Ellis of Wayland; his sisters and brothers in law, Bonnie and Lawrence Kirkum of Wayland, Donna and Mike Parks of Wayland, Gary and Barb Ellis of Wayland, Donald and Ellen Ellis of Wayland, Cameron Ellis of Wayland and Stacy Ellis (Joe Marmo) of Irondequoit; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jim’s family and friends may call Saturday July 22, 2023 from 1-4 pm at St. George-Forsythe Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. Jim’s funeral service will be Sunday July 23rd, 2023 at 1pm at the funeral home.
