A Biography of Harmon L. Pifer I and Sylvia Harter Pifer

Information from Amanda Pifer

Sylvia is originally from Bolivar, NY in Allegany County where her Dad worked the oil fields 91 years ago. Harmon was from Cohocton.

Harmon and Sylvia Pifer worked the Erwin farm (1948 to 1956) on shares with Theodore and Eva Humphrey, now owned by Ed Petraitis at the foot of Carney Hollow Road.

In 1956, Harmon and Sylvia purchased the Ed Wright Farm on Carney Hollow Road where they had a dairy farm which is now owned by one of the Amish Hershberger families save for that portion with the house still owned by Sylvia Pifer.

One of Sylvia Pifer’s sons, Daniel, is Amanda’s father and her mother is Eileen Washburn, now divorced. Amanda’s 2 sons, Dakota Pifer and Jacob Pifer, are now among Sylvia’s great grandchildren. Sylvia is 91 years old.

Harmon L. Pifer, 90, passed away peacefully Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Harmon was born Aug. 27, 1916, in Conesus, a son of Charles and Edith (Howard) Pifer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Pacific Theater of WWII from 1941 to 1945.

He married Sylvia Harter on Dec. 3, 1946; she survives. He was a retired self-employed dairy farmer, owning and operating the Pifer Dairy Farm in Springwater for many years.

Harmon was a member of the DAV (Diasbled American Veterans). He enjoyed reading and fishing and was a pitch enthusiast. But most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends.

Harmon is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Sylvia; two daughters, Anna Kline (Jim McMahon) and Linda (Ron) Beuter; three sons: Harmon ‘Herk’ (Diane) Pifer Jr., George (Liz) Pifer and Daniel (Shirley) Pifer; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandsons; three sisters; one brother; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Wayland Sylvia Mae (Harter) Pifer, age 92, passed away on Monday, March 22, 2021 at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville. Sylvia was born on July 17, 1928 in Bolivar NY to the late Merlin & Alta (Potter) Harter.

On December 3, 1946 she married Harmon Pifer Sr. Sylvia was a seamstress and worked with several organizations over the years. She was also a life-long member of the Webster Crossing UMC. More than anything, Sylvia enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Sylvia is predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Harmon, who passed away in 2006; 6 brothers, and 1 sister.

Sylvia is survived by her children: Anna (Jim McMahon) Kline, Linda Beuter, Harmon (Diane) Pifer Jr., George (Liz) Pifer, & Daniel (Shirley) Pifer; her siblings: Edith Stout, Fred (Vicki) Harter & Frank (Kathleen) Harter; 8 grandchildren, & 14 great-grandchildren.

Family & friends are invited to call from 4-7 on Friday, March 26, 2021 at the Walter E. Baird & Sons Funeral Home in Wayland. A graveside service will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, March 27, 2021 at Pleasant Valley West Cemetery on Moose Road.

Everyone is reminded that facial coverings, social distancing and no-contact policies will be in place at the funeral home and at the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial contribution to the Webster Crossing UMC (7260 NY-15, Springwater NY 14560).
