Genealogy and Short History of the Caskey Family

Genealogy and Short History of the Caskey Family

Written by Edgar M. Caskey, May 1932

Contributed by Richard V. Caskey and Michele Heck Caskey.

Starting with my grandfather:

Henry Caskey, who lived at Canadice Corners Ontario Co. NY was born (approx.) 1824 and passed out at about 50 years of age, he was a carpenter and builder in the days when the men went into the woods and fell trees and hewed the timbers from them, by hand, in the winters he shaved ax-handles and sold them, he made a very fine handle and sold many of them, he was also a great rifle shot, as to his nationality I know nothing about it and as I remember he had no religion but was a very good kind man and never had any troubles. He married Margaret Cratsley and to them was born six children, three boys and three girls, he passed out at about the age of 50 years and is buried in the old ground at the Methodist Church Canadice Corners NY.

Margaret Cratsley, the wife of Henry Caskey was several years younger than he, and her parents came from Scotand. I remember them well. They were my Great Grandfather and Grandmother. She lived to about the age of 58 years, she is also buried in the old ground at the same church.

Jacob Cratsley and wife, father and mother of my Grandmother Caskey to whom was born 5 children, 2 boys and 3 girls, of these only two of the girls was married, one of them being my Grandmother, the other married to a Daniel Beers, he was a 32nd degree mason, went to Europe to get the best in those days ... had to do this. The boys were bachelors, one of them working with grandfather at the builders trade, the other owned and operated a small farm and took care of his sister who was scared into fits by a drunk with a musket during the training period of the Civil War.

Children of Henry Margaret Caskey given in respect to their ages, the oldest first,

Alva J. Caskey, my father, married Phoebe Chapman and I was the only child, they are both buried in the new ground at the same Methodist church at Canadice Corners NY. They are buried close to the south fence, no stone markers that I know of. My adopted sister managed to get mother to sign all the property over to her before she passed on and I decide that she should buy the markers.

Libbie Caskey, married Horace Purcell, who operated a threshing machine and saw mill at some small town near Buffalo NY, to them was born two children a boy by the name of Jay and Nora. Jay married Bell Caskey and are cousins and daughter of Joline Caskey, I understand he has passed on, where their uncle and aunt ... are buried I do not know.

Willard Caskey, married for his first wife Clara Knowles and to them was born a girl Minnie Caskey about two years younger than I, she married Fred Seward and they now live at Springwater Valley NY, he operates an Oil and Gas station, his second wife Mrs. Dorothy Knowles was a sister of his first and to them a son was born, Floyd who now lives at Springwater NY, he divorced his first wife and for his second he married the widow of Floyd Ingraham a son of Marchus Ingraham, brother of Emma, a wife of E. M. Caskey, uncle Willard and both wives have passed out, he was a farmer.

John Caskey, married Cora Wright to them was born five children, as follows: Bell (Bill) married Joy (Jay) Purcell an own cousin, no children. Elenor married a Mastin. Willard married Jennie Doolitte, Clara I do not know who she married. The youngest son I know nothing about. John of all the children are now alive, Cora passed on about one year ago, John is a carpenter contractor who lives at Hemlock NY.

Catherine Caskey, married William Sisco, to them was born two children, a boy Leon and a girl of them has passed out, the rest I know nothing of.

Referring to the wife of A. J. Caskey, my mother Phoebe Casey, who was Phoebe Chapman, the youngest of seven children born to Elder Chapman and wife, who were my grand parents on my mothers side, they had passed out before I was born, therefore I know nothing about them only what I have heard my mother tell, he was a Christian preacher and sometimes he rode horseback 17 miles. As I understand it he had several places that he preached from time to time. They lived practically in the country. At one time when he was away over night, Grandmother was alone with the children in a new house and one of the windows was not in yet they had a bed quilt hung up and she noticed something striking the quilt and stuck a long poker into the fire place and finally a panther stuck his head in and she shoved the red hot poker into his face and he left.
