Aubrey A. Haynes, a leading business man of Springwater, passed away at his home in the village March 17th, following an illness of two weeks. He was 64 years old. Although he had been in poor health for some time, he continued to be active in his store up to a fortnight ago.
Mr. Haynes came to Springwater from North Cohocton about thirty-nine years ago. Launching his business at that time on a modest scale, he went on, in the years that followed to develop a large general store, operated first in the Morris & Grover block and later moving to the site now occupied. In recent years he had discontinued some of the general store lines and represented the Red & White stores.
Always interested in athletics, especially base ball and basketball, Mr. Haynes is affectionately remembered by several generations of young people whose teams he supported enthusiastically. In his own youth, he had won quite a reputation locally as a base ball player and he never lost his interest in the game, often managing and always sponsoring local teams. As recently as the night before he gave in to illness and was taken to the hospital, he had attended a basketball game here.
Surviving the death of his wife by only two years, he leaves a son, Reginald Haynes; a daughter, Irene Haynes Schofield of Forest Hills, Long Island, and a sister, Mrs. George Ross of North Cohocton.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist church on Friday afternoon, the Rev. Helena L. Champlin officiating.
Pall bearers were: (Honorary) C. F. Cannon, Ebenezer Robinson, S. E. Robinson, Clair Grover, Joseph Hunt, George Wheaton, the Rev. John Conklin and L. Crandall. (Active) E. J. Miller, George Higgins, M. S. Mack, Frank Laumbahr, Ward Artlip and Charles Hansen.
An unusually large number of floral tributes attested to the esteem in which Mr. Haynes was held in the community.
