The Obituary of Harrison E. Allen I

18 August 1841 - 25 October 1926

From the Wayland Register, 28 October 1926.

Springwater - Harrison E. Allen was found dead in bed Monday morning at the Hotel Springwater where he was staying. In the death of Mr. Allen the village loses one of its oldest and highly respected residents, also the last remaining member of William B. Hazen Post, Grand Army of the Republic.

Mr. Allen was born August 18th, 1841 and when the Civil war broke out in 1861 he enlisted at Dansville in the First New York Dragoons and was in many of the big battles in the Virginia campaign - Chancellorsville, the Wilderness under General Wadsworth, and on down through the Shenandoah valley campaign and battle with Sheridan at Winchester. He was taken prisoner later in the war and confined for several months with 10,000 others in Andersonville prison, where he nearly died of starvation. He was finally released, more dead than alive, by an exchange of prisoners, and sent home. Unable to reach Springwater, he was taken from the train at Livonia, where he was taken into the home of B. T. Briggs, an old friend, and slowly nursed back to health.

At the close of the war he married Loretta Capron and soon after entered into partnership with his brother-in-law, S. L. Whitlock, and for over forty years kept the corner store here, under the firm name of Allen & Whitlock. He also served several terms as postmaster.

At the time of Mrs. Allen’s death in 1917 he went to live with his son, Clare, and since then had divided his time between his home in New York and his other son, Dr. H. C. Allen, of Endicott.

Mr. Allen came to Springwater in September to be near his son, Clare, and when Clare passed away on September 23rd, he intended to remain with his daughter-in-law, and make Springwater his permanent home.

Mr. Allen is survived by one son, Dr. H. C. Allen, and three grandchildren.

The funeral was held at the M. E. church, Wednesday at 1 p.m., the interment being made in Mt. Vernon Evergreen cemetery.

The Obituary of Loretta C. Capron Allen

October 1841 - 13 January 1917

From the Springwater Star, 18 January 1917.

Mrs. Loretta Capron Allen, wife of Harrison E. Allen, a well known and respected resident of this village, died at her home Saturday afternoon, aged 76 years.

Mrs. Allen had been in ill health for over a year. She returned a week ago from a visit with her son, Dr. Harry C. Allen, in Oxford, and the exertion of the trip is thought to have hastened her death.

Mrs. Allen was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Capron and was born in October 1841. She is the last of five children.

Mrs. Allen leaves, besides her husband, two sons, Dr. Allen, of Oxford, and Clare B. Allen, of this village.
