New School Building in Hemlock

A New Union School at Hemlock

From the Democrat & Chronicle, 19 October 1911. Rediscovered by Lore Disalvo.

Hemlock - Oct. 18 - Substantial progress is being made in the construction of the new $15,000 union school building at Hemlock. An attractive site consisting of several acres in the center of the town, was purchased by the School Board from J. E. Reynolds of this place for $2000. The Reynolds home formerly located on this property, was sold by auction Oct. 7th for $22 to S. J. Wilson, who has moved the house to a new location. On the same date the School Board let the building contracts to John A. Bears, contractor of Livonia; and John Nickerson, of the Livonia Cement Company.

Some days later Horace T. Hatten, of Rochester, the architect in charge of the work, staked out the foundation measurements, and digging commenced immediately. Mr. Hatten states that the buildings will be ready for use by March 1st at the latest.

At that time the pupils at present attending the two district schools, and those attending the High School now held in the Odd Fellow’s Hall, will all occupy the new building, which will be fitted throughout with the best modern school equipment and will afford ample accommodations for the school needs.
