A Tribute to the late Mrs. Augusta Richardson

“Lives of great men all remind us

We can make our lives sublime,

And, in parting, leave behind us,

Footprints on the sands of time.”

Not everyone can make themselves great. Lack of environment and opportunity place a limit upon the greater part of the world’s mass of people. But this part of humanity is just as necessary to the world, and their mission as great, as that of the poets adn artists. Their foot-prints may not be so distinct, but they are not lost to the Great Master.

For two years the writer lived “near neighbor” to Mrs. Richardson. The traits of a character great in perpetual sunshine and abounding faith became well known to her. Her life belonged to her Heavenly Father, and her daily walk was an evidence of her spiritual intercourse with her Maker.

When we looked at the toil-worn hands, we see that a life has been given to toil, devotion and sacrifice, and we understand that our lives are for service.

This is the meaning of life and death is the door that opens to us an eternal life of reward for well-doing. It will reveal to us our mistakes here and show us more clearly the eternal adjustments to a higher life.

Mrs. Richardson was a faithful Christian, a true friend, and a good neighbor. Can we ask for better qualities?

And now comes rest.

A friend, E. B. B.
