The Obituary of William Sheldon Doolittle

30 November 1815 - 23 October 1890

From the Livonia Gazette, 31 October 1890

Canadice - The late Wm. S. Doolittle was born in Middleton, Vt., in 1815, and moved to Canadice with his parents when 9 years old. He was the oldest of a family of eleven children, five of whom are now living.

He was one of the old settlers, who used the wooden plow and drove the ox team. His first wife was a daughter of the Deacon John Adams, who was at one time a resident of Canadice but subsequently removed to Michigan. The death of this lady occurred thirty-seven years ago, and he subsequently married Miss Jane Southwick, who survives him. He leaves one son. Mr. Doolittle was one of the best citizens of the town, and his death is sincerely regretted by all classes.

Mr. Berrick Doolittle of Baldwinsville attended the funeral of his brother, Wm. S. Doolittle. Mr. and Mrs. Alvah Doolittle of Wayland were also present. Mr. Alvah Doolittle, who is 90 years old and in good health, was an uncle of the deceased.

In the death of Mr. Doolittle the town loses a good citizen, the community a kind neighbor, and the church one whose place, in some respect, can not be filled from the ranks of its members. He had been foremost in church work. The relatives are assured of the sympathy of all in their affliction. The deceased had been an earnest Christian for over forty years, though never having united with the church. The Rev. Mr. Day officiated at the funeral.

Resolution

The pastor and board of trustees of the Canadice Methodist church recently adopted the following preamble and resolutions on the death of the late Wm. S. Doolittle:

Whereas, Our Heavenly Father, in the dispensation of providence, has removed from the scene of this earth life, up to the life of the future, Brother Wm. S. Doolittle; and in his death the board of trustees of the Methodist church loses a most honored and faithful member of many years standing - a bright, genial and ever-hopeful worker; the church one who looked after her every interest; the community an honest and upright citizen, and his family a most devoted and loving husband and parent; therefore, Resolved (1) That in our sorrow we bow submissively, and collectively as members of the board of trustees, pastor and members of the Methodist Episcopal church of Canadice, and do hereby extend our sympahty and condolence to the bereaved in their hour of trial, commending them to the care of Him who doeth all things well; (2) That a copy of these resolutions be given to the press and recorded upon our journal, and that a copy of the same be sent to the family of the deceased.
