The Death of Alva Reed of Ye Olde Fiddler’s Picnic

Alva S. Reed of 46 Pioneer St., Rochester, old-time resident of Richmond, died Thursday, Feburary 14, 1957, in Highland Hospital following a stroke suffered the previous Sunday.

Mr. Reed was born in Richmond on December 27, 1868, son of Dudley M. Reed and Anna Short Reed. He attended school in the town of Richmond and worked for several years for the city of Rochester as a pipe line walker. He then engaged in farming on the family farm until his retirement five years ago.

Mr. Reed was well known as a musician and was founder of the Old Time Fiddlers Roundup and Picnic, held each August at Hemlock Lake Park.

Mr. Reed was united in marriage to Lena Flood of Richmond on March 20, 1895. Mrs. Reed died several years ago. Survivors are a daughter, Anna Belle Rowley of Richmond; three sons, Dudley of Hemlock, Raymond of Rochester, and Wheeler of Honeoye. Nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held at the Reed Funeral Home on Sunday, February 17. The Rev. W. Donald Housser of the Livonia Methodist Church officiated. Burial was in Union Cemetery, Livonia.
